Trash & Recycling

New residents of Lansing should contact City Hall at 800 First Terrace or complete and submit the Open New Account form to set up trash, recycling and sewer service. A $75 deposit is required but is refundable after one year as long as the account is in good standing. 

Residents moving out of Lansing should complete the Close Account Form or contact City Hall at 913.727.2487 to close an account.

Sewer, trash, recycling, and yard waste are all included on one bill. Bills are mailed around the 5th of the month and are due by the 25th of the month. If the balance is not paid by the 25th, a delinquent fee of 10% will be added. Payments (cash, check or money order) can be mailed or placed in the drop box located in the City Hall parking lot. Payments with debit/credit card can be made through the city website or can be called in directly to 913.727.2487. A convenience fee of 2.5% is applied to debit and credit card payments. The city also offers Automatic Payment Withdrawal. Payment withdrawals will be made between the 18th and 21st of each month. Please fill out the Automatic Payment Enrollment form and city staff will contact you.

Trash, yard waste, and recycling are picked up every Thursday. All items should be curbside by 6:00 am. Pick up times vary throughout the day. Trash, yard waste and recycling are each collected separately by Waste Management. When the following holidays fall on a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday, pick up will be delayed to Friday of that week: New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.

The city mails out quarterly delinquency notices. The city will assess the property tax rolls for property owners who have accounts that are 60 days delinquent or more. Renters with accounts that are 60 days delinquent or more will be submitted to a collection agency. Residents with delinquent bills are encouraged to contact city staff to discuss payment options.

Trash Service

Trash, yard waste and recycling service has a combined monthly rate of $17.13. A discount for senior residents (age 65 and over) is available with proof of age. 

The city of Lansing contracts with Waste Management to provide solid waste disposal services using automated poly-carts which allow for more efficient service and a clean look for the city. Lansing residents receive a 95 gallon trash cart that MUST be used to ensure pick up. Position your trash cart with the handles facing your house at least three feet from your recycling cart and one foot from the curb. Trash must be placed in plastic bags inside the trash cart. Any bags that do NOT fit inside the cart require overflow waste stickers, which are available at City Hall for $2.00 each, or in sheets of 5 for $10.00.

Recycling Services

Lansing residents receive a 65 gallon recycling cart with a yellow lid. Position your recycling cart with the handle facing the house at least three feet from your trash cart and one foot from the curb. All recyclables should be rinsed and placed loosely inside the cart - NOT in bags.

Acceptable recyclables include newspaper, magazines, cereal boxes, soda cartons and plastics labeled with the numbers 1 through 7. For guidelines on acceptable recyclables, pleaser refer to the yellow lid  or to the Waste Management residential website, or download a complete detailed list. Glass, Styrofoam, pizza boxes, plastic shopping bags are should not be placed in the recycling cart. 

E-Waste and Household Hazardous Waste can be disposed of at the Leavenworth County Transfer Station.

Yard Waste

March 1 to November 30 - Residents can place up to twelve (12) containers / biodegradable bags or bundles of yard waste per week at the curb. Branches and tree limbs should be cut into lengths of four feet with a maximum diameter of four inches or less. Bundles should be tied with string or twine and not exceed 18 inches in diameter or 65 lbs. No dirt or rocks / stones permitted.

December 1 to February 28 - Yard waste will only be collected the first collection day of each month and is limited to twelve (12) containers / biodegradable bags.

Bulky Item Pick Up

Residents are allowed one complimentary large item pick up per year, per house. Bulky items permitted for collection include:

Small household appliances
Washers
Dryers
Chairs
Mattresses

Extra Pick Ups

Waste Management will pick up six overflow bags on the pick up days following Independence Day and Christmas Day. Overflow stickers are NOT required on these bags on these days. Additionally, Waste Management will pick up two Christmas trees per residence on the two retrieval dates following Christmas Day. Trees over 6 feet tall MUST be cut in half.
