Library - One Book Many Neighbors: Lansing

Wednesday, July 14, 2021 - 6:30pm

This presentation is brought to us by a grant provided by The Kansas Humanities Council. If the weather is nice, it will be held outside the Lansing Community Center. For inclement weather, we will be inside. Register by calling 913-727-2929 or stop in the library.

This event is part of the 2021 One Book, Many Neighbors Summer Program Series! We will be discussing the stories from the book, Best Loved Folktales of the World and it can be checked out from the library. Be sure to pick up your passport for this year's program. The stories for this program are The Juniper Tree and The Goose Girl.

In the 19th century, Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm - known as the Brothers Grimm - traveled Europe collecting folktales, most of which were never intended for children. Why did the Grimm brothers document odd stories, such as The Six Swans, Maid Maleen, and Nixie in the Millpond? This talk explores the story of the Brothers Grimm and their folktales, and discusses why collecting these stories can be important for understanding a community’s values and fears. Priscilla Howe is a freelance storyteller and a 2015 Fulbright Senior Scholar.
