Council member Gene Kirby was elected to the City Council in April 2011. As Council President, Kirby became Mayor in 2014 upon the death of Mayor Billy Blackwell. Kirby returned to the City Council in 2017, appointed to replace a Council member who resigned. Prior to his service on the City Council, he served on the Lansing Board of Zoning Appeals. Kirby currently serves on the Lansing Parks and Recreation Board. He moved to Lansing in 1997 from Kansas City, Kans., where he and his wife were both born and raised.

Kirby and his wife, Debbie, were married in 1976. They are active members of The Compassionate Friends, a support group for those who have lost a child. The Kirbys have three children - one son and two daughters - Casey Kirby, Nicole Kirby Birge, M.D., and Hannah Kirby, who is a graduate of Lansing High School.

Kirby is the manager of the Mount Muncie Cemetery, where it has been his pleasure to serve countless families of the Lansing and Leavenworth communities.
