Spring is officially here! Spring returned with the SPRING EQUINOX (Vernal Equinox). The equinox marks the astrological start of spring which occurred on Tuesday, March 19th, 2024, at 10:06 PM central.

YOUTH SPORTS

YOUTH SPRING SOCCER:

The 2024 Youth Spring Soccer season will kick off with games beginning on Saturday, March 30th! Schedules were emailed to all participants on Tuesday, March 19th. As the old proverb goes, "March winds and April showers bring forth May flowers," we would like to provide you with our inclement weather details:

RAINOUT INFORMATION FOR LANSING PARKS & RECREATION:

If Lansing experiences inclement weather Monday through Friday, field closures will be announced by 4 p.m. If Saturday games for the U6 and U8 age divisions in Lansing are canceled, notifications will be issued by 8 a.m., or coaches can decide to cancel games on-site if needed.

WEATHER POLICIES that may affect practices/games:

Cold Weather Policy – Lansing Parks and Recreation has implemented the following policy for cold weather during games/practices. The temperature must be above 40° F for outside activities to proceed as scheduled, however appropriate clothing must be worn.

Inclement Weather Policy - When Lansing USD 469 is closed due to weather conditions, all Lansing Parks and Recreation sports practices/games will also be canceled. No exceptions.

Tornado Watch / Warning – If a tornado watch is in effect, games and practices will continue until the tornado watch is upgraded to a tornado warning or field conditions become unsafe. When a tornado warning is in effect all Lansing Parks & Recreation activities will be canceled and re-scheduled.

YOUTH BASEBALL / SOFTBALL / T-BALL:

Registration for Baseball, Softball, and T-Ball will CLOSE on Sunday, March 31st. You can register online via our website or at our office during regular business hours. Refunds will not be offered once the uniform and equipment order has been placed. The refund deadline for the 2024 season will be no later than 4:30 p.m. on Friday, April 19th.

COACHING INFORMATION:

Interested in being a volunteer coach? You can apply online, via email, phone, or in person at the Lansing Parks & Recreation office. We will accept applications for Baseball, Softball, and T-ball coaches throughout April. Volunteers do not need to be associated with a participant. If you're new to coaching, Youth Recreation Sports is an excellent platform to develop your skills! However, applying to be a coach does not guarantee a coaching position.

Requirements:

-18 years of age or older.
-Required to complete a background check.
-A signed Coach's Code of Ethics must be on file.

NEXT REGISTRATION:

2024 YOUTH FALL SPORTS - Fall Soccer, Flag Football, & Cheerleading

Mark your calendars! Registration begins July 1st and will continue through July 31st. Please stay tuned to our Facebook for more information. Keep in mind that our Flag Football and Cheerleading programs coincide with Fall Soccer and that participants must choose between the programs.

THE LANSING ACTIVITY CENTER

OPEN GYM WILL BE CLOSED:

Open Gym will be closed from Monday, April 15th through Monday, April 22nd in preparation for the annual Friends of the Library Book Sale. The book sale will be from Friday, April 19th (Friends Members Only Night) through Sunday, April 21st. For further details, visit the Lansing Community Library’s website at www.lansingks.org/library. Open Gym will resume normal operations on Tuesday, April 23rd.

OPEN GYM INFORMATION:

Open Gym is a program for youth and adults provided by the City of Lansing for Lansing School District 469 residents. An Open Gym pass will be required for use – All new participants must register at the Parks & Recreation office and pay a one-time fee of $5.00 for a pass. Proof of residency is required at registration. Participants under 18 must have a parent/guardian register them. Participants 12 and under must be supervised by someone aged 16 or older.

To prove identity and residency, a state or government-issued ID with a Lansing address will be needed along with one of the following: tax bill, rental agreement, utility bill, pay stub, award letter, or Skyward profile with an address.

MORE FROM PARKS & RECREATION

David Trinkle Jr. Youth Fishing Derby:

The David Trinkle Jr. Youth Fishing Derby is scheduled for May 4th, 2024, at Kenneth W. Bernard Community Park. Check-in starts at 8:30 am. Fishing begins at 9:30 a.m. and ends at 11:00 am. Immediately following will be lunch and the award ceremony.

Registration will begin on April 8th and will END on Thursday, May 2nd. Pre-registration is required. Sign up online via the Youth Sports Registration portal on our website or visit our office during normal business hours to register in person.

This event is open to youth up to and including 15 years of age as of the day of the derby. Registration fees include bait and a picnic lunch. Prizes are given for numerous categories.

ARBOR DAY CEREMONIAL TREE PLANTING:

The City of Lansing, in alignment with its commitment to being a Tree City USA community, officially observes Arbor Day with the planting of a new tree in the community annually. This year's event will be at City Hall, at the south end of the lower parking lot, on Friday, April 5th, at 10:00 a.m. Learn more about what it takes to be a part of the Tree City USA community at www.arborday.org/programs/treecityusa.
